Crushing is the first step in the process of size reduction: reducing large lumps to manageable sized pieces. For some processes crushing is sufficient, but for chemical processes it is usually followed by grinding to produce a fine-sized powder.

agree  JohnMcDove: Yes, that is the idea, "crumbling, breaking up". Not sure if "grinding" implies too fine a particle, but "crushing and breaking up" seem adequate.

-> Thanks, John. There was some imprecision in the use of the terms in Spanish. Crushing and grinding also tended to be conveyed together as one (two-part) process. And while it explains it to a layperson, I never saw "breaking up" in the sci. sources.
