Bio
My strength is research. I am a good researcher with an abstract ability to recognize what I DON'T know. Finding it is the easy part, understanding what you need to find is my strength.

I have lived in Brazil for 22 years, with more than 17 years working as a freelance translator, working only with PORT-ENG. I have been married to a Brazilian for 20 years and we adopted our first child, Jonathan in 2009.

I am an electrical engineer specializing in mainframe computing (hardware and software) who also taught English for several years here in Brazil before venturing into translation work as my Portuguese language skills improved. I follow the golden rule, and it is only my personal opinion, that translators should not translate into any language other than their mother tongue as I believe there will always be something that gives you away as a non native, and thus makes the translation less than perfect.

I am an eclectic individual with personal interests in areas from technology and futurism to the arts and literature and this gives me the ability to work with a wide variety of fields. Back in my former life in Australia, I held a private pilots license and when I was not at my day job as a computer engineer, I could be found in theaters around the country following my passion as an amateur actor and singer.

With respect to technical translations , I do a lot of work with mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronic, I.T, chemical, telecommunications, aviation, agricultural, large plant equipment, civil construction and most of the engineering disciplines, which may include user manuals, workshop manuals, product brochures and contract preparation for tenders etc.
I have extensive experience in the automobile, vehicle, truck, bus area etc, having done a lot of work for JOHN DEERE S/A, CASE I.H Brazil, VOLVO, SCANIA, and others.

I also do medical related work, mainly through my wife, who works for the Institute of Cardiology here in Porto Alegre. This involves doctorate and post doctorate theses and abstracts and publications relating to cardiology and general medicine in addition to studies and medical equipment manuals, etc

In non technical work, I work with marketing documents, website localizations and video subtitling work and even audio voice over work for sound studios and many other areas.

I have done work for the following agencies here in Brazil; Terralingua, Tradusca, TTL Services Sao Paulo, Words and Words, and Translateway, as well as global agencies in Europe and the U.S like TheBigWord in Leeds, GKLS Europe Xerox Global Services in Berkshire and many others.

I also use Dragonspeak voice recognition software in conjunction with Trados, which permits me to speak the translation rather than type it, thus permitting me to handle a larger volume of words with more accuracy as it uses the MS dictionary directly. I have achieved up to 8,000 words a day on certain types of projects using these cutting edge resources and I believe vocal input rather than typing is the future of translation.
