But I am knowledgeable enough to spot mistakes (errors in logic and inconsistencies, etc.) in the source text and ask the author who, in most cases, is an engineer the right questions.
With very leading-edge stuff, there is almost little out there on the web to reference. So, I flag mistakes or make a list of queries to send the client at delivery. And, in most cases, the client welcomes this input/feedback.

Even engineers attend training and refresher courses. So, it's impossible and unreasonable to assume that the translator knows everything which a lot of LSPs and agencies do.

I network either with my ex-colleagues, mostly with a terminologist (I worked as in-house translator for 20 years) or with a tight group of trusted freelancers built-up over the years (some are Prozians). Over the years, I have also been pestering a lawyer friend of mine and one of my nieces (she is a medical doctor)…

Kudoz. (Why wasn't this an option?)

Of course, you have to be selective about the answers but the surrounding discussion is often helpful.

There is always the kudoz section of proz, where colleagues who are more familiar with certain areas often provide valuable insights.

As for my personal situation, calling it a "network" makes it sound all professional and slick, but I do sometimes ask someone, usually a colleague, friend or acquaintance who is more knowledgeable about a certain subject area, or simply for a 2nd opinion. For example I asked my mechanic about some car-related terms not long ago....

The actual question Jun 17, 2017

I believe the actual question here is: Are you a KudoZ regular user? Do you think it's a network of experts... etc.

Yes, I consider ProZ a network of experts that can help me, as well as other similar forums I use regularly. The only issue is that many non-experts make wrong and literal suggestions, many colleagues agree with the wrong and literal suggestions, and many askers actually select the wrong and literal suggestions, and they go to the glossary.

So, in order for ProZ to be really useful, you have to have the patience to open the questions and read the suggestions and comments, for many times the best answer is concealled among them.
