To French?! Apr 13, 2021

I thought the Welsh had a monopoly on also being a verb:

https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/welsh

I think the French should stick to being an adjective for long thin things (beans and letters).

French letters Apr 13, 2021

When I was living in China I knew an American man. One time he wanted to take a taxi and go somewhere. He asked if I could help him write out the address in Chinese so he could show it to the taxi driver. I wrote it with a pencil on a small piece of paper. I made a mistake and asked him, 'I don't suppose you have a rubber on you?' He looked surprised and seemed to be thinking what to do. Seeing his face, I realised the misunderstanding. 'I meant an eraser,' I said.

Serious question(!): Does this mean people in China are taught British English rather than American English?

Good question! Apr 13, 2021

When I started to learn English in my primary school in the '90s it was British English on the curriculum. I don't know exactly when but later it was American English that was taught because apparently the British hurt our feelings.

It was a taxi taxi so you might want to practise yoga before you go. Make your body supple and nimble enough to carry out the act.

Perhaps I'll try it in India first, where they have got bigger passenger compartments in their taxi taxis:

...1.380 billion people only in India I have hurt with that blatant racistic video from the early 90s I quoted. You have therefore won and I better run (into my after-hours for today). Cheers!

Thailand Apr 13, 2021

My (white) husband and I visited Bangkok a few years ago. When we were going to a bar one night we went by a red-light district. Nearly all the couples there looked like us, a white man and an Asian girl. Suffice it to say, we blended in quite well.

And Matthias, no one is too young for Thailand. Live a little.

Thank you Zibow for your kind advice to visit the beaches of Thailand (I think we were talking of the beaches), but we have beautiful beaches too here in Germany, i.e. at the Northsea:

Photo taken in summer 2015 at the dyke of the Meldorfer Bucht (Northsea). Of course you have to pay to enter the area (carefully read the instructions on the plate and have some small change in spare for the ticket), before you may enjoy the beautiful scenery in its fully and have a lot of fun.
