Charpente-arc-portique

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Building framework
Hi all,

I'm translating an HR presentation from French (FR) to English (UK) about how to use the Dalux tool on construction workflow and quality management. The presentation refers to the SYCODES categorisation system used by the Agence Qualite Construction to breakdown potential non-compliances into specific areas (https://qualiteconstruction.com/outil-numerique/service-nume... A list of these different categories appears in an appendix. This is where the tricky phrase appears. Please see below for context:

3. CHARPENTE-COUVERTURE
3.00 Charpente-arc-portique en bois massif
3.10 Couverture en petits éléments
3.30 Couverture en grands éléments
3.40 Couverture spéciale
3.50 Evacuation des EP
3.60 Eléments incorporés à la couverture (fonction d'étanchéité seulement)
3.70 Charpente-Couverture Ouvrages sous couvertures : Ecran, Isolation

Could anyone help please? Thanks in advance!

Schtroumpf Nov 4, 2021:

Althea Draper Nov 4, 2021:
When you look at the Sycodés 2016 document, the phrase "Charpente-arc-portique en bois massif" is used on the bar charts. However, in the description of the findings below the charts this is referred to as
"les charpentes-arcs-portiques en bois massif" (pages 19, 151 and 155)
"les charpentes, arcs, portiques en bois massif" (pages 124, 136, 137 and 150)
"les charpentes, arcs-portiques en bois massif" (page 125)
"les charpentes arcs, portiques en bois massif" (pages 127, 128 and 129)
"les charpentes-arcs et portiques en bois massif" (page 141)

So it seems that whoever prepared this document didn't know what it meant either!

I think charpente is framing.

Solid timber framework, arches and portal frames

From Dictionary of Building and Civil Engineering Dictionnaire Du Bâtiment Et Du Génie Civil - Don Montague

"charpente f - structural frame(work)
charpente f en bois - timber frame"
https://www.academia.edu/7029951/Dictionnaire_genie_civil_fr...

Page 7 of the link below shows what a portique and arc are in terms of roofing structures and pages 15 to 19 show examples of uses in real life.
https://docplayer.fr/18302004-Construire-en-acier-documentat...

The Don Montague dictionary also has
"portique m gantry, portal frame, portico"
"arc m arc [curve], arc [in welding], arch"

This next reference is about steel portal frames (but is applicable to wood) and has a good selection of images.

"Portal frames are generally low-rise structures, comprising columns and horizontal or pitched rafters, connected by moment-resisting connections. Resistance to lateral and vertical actions is provided by the rigidity of the connections and the bending stiffness of the members, which is increased by a suitable haunch or deepening of the rafter sections. This form of continuous frame structure is stable in its plane and provides a clear span that is unobstructed by bracing. Portal frames are very common, in fact 50% of constructional steel used in the UK is in portal frame construction. They are very efficient for enclosing large volumes, therefore they are often used for industrial, storage, retail and commercial applications as well as for agricultural purposes."

Finally timber arches (with pictures) -
"The roof support structure consists of five vaults of glulam timber arches; they span 18 metres, rising from the ground like trees in an uplifting sculptural gesture and decreasing in length to suit the triangular site. The largest vault consists of 11 glulam arches which are spaced 9m apart to extend 90m in length, while the smallest vault is 18m long and consists of only three arches."

arch-framed porch (or portico)

« Au moment où il se marie en 1810 avec Marie-Louise d’Autriche, lorsque le cortège passe sous l’arc, il y a seulement trois mètres qui sont sortis de terre. La ville de Paris va offrir la construction d’un arc en charpente et en toile peinte en trompe l’œil. C’est la seule occasion où Napoléon aura vu l’arc complètement construit », complète Bruno Cordeau.

Arched Portico Design
Another very popular portico design idea is the arched roof. It’s not as good at diverting water or stopping snow and ice build up but the look is more elegant.

Due to lack of internet references, I may resort to English-German as well.

Proposal:
3. FRAME-ROOFING
3.00 Wooden arch-framed porch (or portico)
alternatetively: Wodden arched framed porch
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : Not sure about this. Couldn't it be "portico arch framing", or "portico and arch"? The punctuation is unclear.

I understand the term as arched portico (porch with arc)
