French to English translations [PRO] General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters / phone numbers
French term or phrase:Tél (LG)
This is a phone number on a Moroccan medical document. There isn't much context, other than the rest of the contact details for the company (name, address, fax no.)
"Tél (LG): xxxxxxxxxx"
The only thing I can think of is maybe a free phone number so "ligne gratuit" perhaps? I can't find anything concrete to support this though.
Translation clients/customers could save themselves so much money if they told LSPs what bits of info they wanted translating in documents. Us struggling over 20-character reference numbers and the like in pre-OCR days! Ah well.
"[They said that] information like this wasn't important, they were only really concerned with the medical information."
When I started out in translation, we would just put "From X to Y" at the top of the letter, and the date, and the reference, and no one ever complained. Nowadays, agencies expect you to reproduce every single piece of information, and the layout itself - even things like their bank account number and how to get to their offices on public transport.
Your client's comment about this information not being important is very telling. Essentially, they're being charged extra for stuff they don't need.
Hi all. I heard back from the client on this and despite me asking for clarification on this (along with many other uncertainties (poor quality ST)) they simply said that information like this wasn't important, they were only really concerned with the medical information. I'm sorry I couldn't get a definitive answer for you all, I thank you very much for looking into this for me. I've decided to go with just "Tel" as from what I can gather from all of your findings, the "LG" doesn't seem to be that important anyway, especially since the client doesn't really need this information anyway.
Of all suggestions, ''LG'' lignes groupées sounds plausible. However, I wonder whether you wouldn't leave it as it is ''LG'', in which case it stands for Lignes Groupées.
Kindly note that in Morocco the switchboard is ''Le standard'', we usually speak of ''numéro gratuit'' ou ''numéro vert'' as in ''Toll Free Number''. ''Ligne Geographique'' is simply not an option, never heard of here. As for LG standing for the brand, it doesn't make sense at all. Wish I could be of better help.
@Tony: I'm afraid that's really all the context there is, just the one phone number, no others, just the address and fax number
@Conor I'm afraid I don't want to post the number, not even part of it, I'm not sure it will help anyway. The location is Casablanca in Morocco if that helps
Depends a bit on what other conatct details are given? Could it be 'ligne générale', which in EN we'd probably give as 'switchboard', if they maybe also give some direct line numbers to specific departments; a clue to this might be if ends in say -00, whereas all the direct line numbers end with the digits representing their extension number, say?
Best not to post any confidential info like phone numbers......
