Bus/Financial - Business/Commerce (general) / Pay stub and statement of earnings (from Chile)
Spanish term or phrase: Tributario e Imponible
Hi! I'm translating a pay stub and a statement of earnings from a client and there are three sections under his total amount one is Tributario, the other one is Imponible, and then finally his net salary. I found that both are translated taxable, but I need different words.
Thanks!

Taxable Income and Pre-Benefits Income
Explanation:
In Chile imponible is not the same as taxable:

Imponible is the amount from which your social security payments are discounted.
Tributario is the amount from which your tax is deducted.

Because of differences in tax law and wage structures, there is not an exact translation into English. Also, the US, for example, just lists all the discounts without sub-categorisation. The closest I would venture is taxable income and pre-benefits income.

As pointed out by some colleagues, pre-benefits income is not necessarily clear for everyone (also slightly clumsy).

As these are headings on a pay slip, and from personal experience, there is not a lot of room for lengthy descriptive titles, I've been trying to come up with a better alternative. Not easy.

As nielmac suggests, I think most people would understand that SS=social security.

I wonder then if you could get away with Pre-SS deduct. Inc. (spelling out deductions and income depending on the available space).

Tax and SS (Social Security)

Explanation:
If, as Alex explains, "Imponible is the amount from which your social security payments are discounted. ", then I think we could just use "SS" for the heading, or "Social Security" is there is physically enough room on the pay stub,.
=> "Tax Total + SS Total + Net"

neutral  Alex Ossa: But the header "Social Security" implies that is the amount that is discounted from your pay (for social security purposes), rather than the amount of salary from which this amount is discounted.

taxable income and income subject to social security deductions

Explanation:
The definition provided by Alex is right, but I think this might be a clearer translation.

neutral  Alex Ossa: I agree it is clearer, but remember that this is a pay slip heading and that is likely far too wordy. Have you seen a Chilean pay slip? Space is definitely at a premium!
