Cook Children’s Epilepsy Program is one of the leading and most comprehensive pediatric epilepsy programs in the country. It is a dedicated Level IV pediatric epilepsy center, the highest level defined by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, capable of performing the most complex epilepsy surgical procedures. The program integrates a team of highly specialized epileptologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, nurse specialists, EEG technologists, nutritionists, nurse educators, social workers and child life specialists. The result is a collaborative team of physicians and dedicated staff with expertise in the diagnosis and management of children with epilepsy.

The Epilepsy Program benefits from the revolutionary intraoperative MRI (iMRI). The IMRIS (pronounced “EMRIS” like wrist) technology, of which Cook Children’s is one of a handful of children’s hospitals in the country to acquire, provides the surgeon with accurate digital images of changing brain anatomy during surgery, and may reduce the need for repeated surgeries.
Our state-of-the-art Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, EMU, is an important part of the comprehensive evaluation and integrated care of patients with epilepsy and recurrent unprovoked spells. More than 800 children a year have been admitted to our ten-bed unit. The EMU has the capability to perform wireless electroencephalograms, EEGs, which allow the children to continue their normal activities while being monitored. The EMU is part of the Cook Children’s Neurophysiology Program, and performs EEGs, video EEGs, electrocorticography, brain mapping and brain stimulation procedures. Other modalities performed by the Neurophysiology Program include in- and out-patient and intra-operative brainstem auditory evoked potentials, visual evoked potentials, somatosensory evoked potentials, motor evoked potentials, electromyography and nerve conduction studies.
The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit was designed with the patient and family in mind. There are 10 private rooms with enough space for a parent or guardian to stay. The unit’s state-of-the-art video EEG equipment allows patients the freedom to come in and out of their rooms, walk around the unit and play in the playroom while being monitored. The hospital has wireless connection, so parents can stay connected with family, school or work.

The physicians in the Epilepsy program have studied at some of the nation’s leading universities, trained at several of the most prestigious neurology, neurosurgery and epilepsy programs, and bring a wealth of compassion and experience to our team.
As medical director of the program, Dr. Angel Hernandez trained at the University of Pittsburgh and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and specializes in the evaluation and management of children with epilepsy.
Dr. Saleem Malik, who trained at the University of Pittsburgh and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, is recognized for his expertise in the evaluation and management of children with epilepsy and brain mapping.
The epilepsy program has dedicated neurosurgeons that specialize in the complex epilepsy surgical procedures. Dr. David Donahue trained at the University of Tennessee, and is the epilepsy program’s neurosurgical director.
We have two additional neurosurgeon’s, Dr. John Honeycutt who trained at the University of Tennessee, and Dr. Richard Roberts who trained at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Cook Children’s neuropsychologists are an integral part of the evaluation of children with epilepsy. Dr. Marsha Gabriel is the epilepsy program’s neuropsychology director and she trained at the University of North Texas, along with Dr. Beth Colaluca.

Cook Children’s Epilepsy Program includes a team of caring and highly skilled nurses and nurse educators, EEG technologists, nutritionists and child life specialists, whose main purpose is to focus on the children in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. The American Nurses Credentialing Center honored Cook Children’s Medical Center with Magnet designation, a coveted award of excellence in nursing care. The recognition means Cook Children’s nursing services rank in the top 5 percent of the nation’s hospitals for nursing excellence.

When you arrive at Cook Children’s, please go to patient registration for check-in. It is very important to be on time for your appointment. A late arrival may mean having to wait because other patients have already started the process. If you have tests scheduled, arriving late may not only disrupt the schedule for the day, but result in the test or tests being postponed to another day. You will then be escorted to the EMU by patient registration personnel.
After arriving at the EMU, the patient and his family will be shown their room and given an orientation of equipment and procedures. A nurse will assess the patient by checking vital signs, weight, medical history, and current medications. Neurodiagnostic and nursing staff will meet with the patient and family. Child Life Services and the nursing staff are available whenever necessary.
(Bite) Alana “The best part about working at Cook Children’s is how we’re so child focused and really family focused even. We focus on the siblings and the parents and the patient to provide a real family centered care. And I love the staff that works here. I think that we really take a team approach in working with families and, uh, so that we can provide them with the best care.”
Once the orientation has been completed, the patient will be taken to the treatment room for placement of leads. The leads measure the electrical activity in the brain. The patient’s head will be wrapped with gauze and the monitoring process will begin. A member of the Neurodiagnostic personnel will then escort the patient and his family to their room. The EMU EEG procedure and equipment will be explained to the patient and his family by Neurodiagnostic personnel who will also answer any questions that may arise. Each patient room and play area are equipped with a Patient Intercom. Intercoms will provide an additional means of communication between patients and staff. Instructions will be given on how to use the Patient Event Button. The patient or a family member is asked to press the Event Button during the occurrence of an episode. Patient Event Buttons should be kept at the head of the bed for easy access during an episode.
The patient or family member will use a Self Reporting Event Log daily to report episodes, auras, and other essential information. Neurodiagnostic personnel will also keep a Patient Event Log in the control room each day of recording. Video camera recording will be used as a way to monitor behavior. Each EMU patient room is equipped with infrared boxes for night time recording. This recording allows patients to come in and out of their rooms, walk around the unit and play in the playroom while being monitored. Depending on the events being evaluated, some patients will need to remain in the room for the duration of the EMU stay. In addition, audio recording will be used to record clinical episodes and patient and personnel verbalization.
When the monitoring is complete, the technologist will carefully remove all of the leads from the patient. All of the information collected during the EEG will then be formally reviewed and treatment will be decided.
The team in the Epilepsy Program is performing more than 100 epilepsy surgeries every year, which positions this program in the top 1% nationally. Numerous lives have been touched by the Cook Children’s Epilepsy Program. The physicians of the Cook Children’s Epilepsy Program have more than 100 years of combined experience treating children with epilepsy and they bring that experience to Cook Children’s, one of a handful of pediatric-only epilepsy programs in the country.

My name is Susan Norris, I was born in Cuba and have lived in Texas most of my life. I began my career as a typographer and evolved into the high tech desktop publishing platform utilizing all the Adobe Suite software. Throughout my career, I have always utilized my bilingual abilities to translate a number of collateral materials. Freelanced at a studio doing voice over and translations which included a 30/min. audio/visual for HUD, a brochure on the assembly of an ambulance for a manufacturing company, and many recruitment advertisings for KFC.
For the past eight years, I am working with a multi-national company as a proofreader/translator providing quality control for POPs, circulars and many other collateral materials for our in-house client. Proofreading at this level is not only looking for typos and such, but also the aesthetics of the piece (kerning/leading, etc.) and making sure the right product and trademarks are being utilized on the piece.
I am also currently taking classes in court interpretation learning legal terms in both languages and practicing simulataneous and consecutive interpretations. You need a lot of practice in this field since it involves witnesses of many countries and the different idioms and slangs.
