memoQ translator pro: created by translators for translators!
memoQ translator pro is a computer-assisted translation tool which runs on Microsoft Windows and on Mac using Parallels or VMWareFusion. It was envisioned more than 12 years ago by a group of enthusiastic linguists who aimed to develop innovative translation software which increases translator's productivity while being easy to learn and use.
Translation memory
memoQ features a state of the art translation memory which stores your translations and helps you reuse them. The translation memory boosts productivity and consistency throughout your project. With a translation memory in place you will never need to translate the same thing twice.
Term base

The Muse
Muses offer automatic suggestions for target terms as you type. Muses are “trained” by analyzing content that is available from your translation memories and LiveDocs corpora. The more content available, the more precise and personalized the suggestions will be.

Integration with Language Terminal
Language Terminal is a free project management tool freelance translators can use to manage their translation work.
Harald Moelzer (medical-translator) . I have been working with the 2014 version now for some 3 years, because many colleagues were so enthusiastic about the simplicity etc. After working with several versions of Trados, which I felt were never really improving, I decided to give MemoQ 2014 a try. Well, you have to learn and adapt to the tool as with any other. It has pros and cons (like any other software has), but what has turned out to be a real disaster, is the concordance function. If you do not match the 100% precise spelling of a word or phrase, you cannot find it in the TM. This means in reality, one of the major functions of this CAT tool is a complete failure…
2019: In the meantime, my PC has crashed, and I had to get all of my tools installed on a new computer, which was successful with all of them, except MemoQ. This is due to a license problem that I have not fully understood yet, and which I am no longer interested in. I will definitely not purchase a new version/license!!!

How easy is it to learn?

Nicolas Bianchi . After reviewing SDL Trados Studio, I will also do a honest review of memoQ.
Many great features, a few annoying flaws.
Pros
- Very stable
- Very responsive Support (I never needed it for critical issues)
- Awesome and accurate aligning tool. Correcting alignments is a piece of cake
- LiveDocs: this feature aligns documents on segment basis but keeps them as a whole. The segments can be used without having to be imported in a TM, as memoQ can look up matches in TMs and LiveDocs. Furthermore, when there’s not much time, alignments can be done and its results used without having to be verified and adjusted. The adjustment can be done on-the-fly when needed while using the resource.
I had several hundreds of bilingual text pairs to align that were in no TM. With Trados, I’d probably still be doing it two years later. With memoQ, the job was done accurately within a few working days.
- Import of monolingual files into LiveDocs
- Interface and usability are really good. Obviously, they are different from Trados. But by no means cluttered!
- Separate pop-up concordance window, which saves space on the main window.
- Possibility to filter concordance results
- Text and Regex filtering fields at the top of the translation pane.
- Possibility to delete some simple formatting tags in the source(!)
And many more...
Cons
- It’ like to be able to see the document structure, maybe via an auto-hiding pane, to prevent scrolling
- It’s not multisession
- No insertion of a pair of tags at once
- No template creation based on a project
- Dashboard management lacks logic (why put projects that one wants to archive in the bin?)
- Username management is not best: memoQ automatically uses as user name the Windows Login account name. This is the default user name for all projects. This can be changed manually, but it’s just plain annoying. It should be possible to set a specific user name in each project template.
Those few cons are far outweighed by memoQ’s numerous advantages.
Last point: the pricing model. People who criticise it obviously didn’t do the maths.
memoQ: Let’s say I buy the software January 2018. If I want to upgrade it in July 2019, I will have to pay roughly 130 euros, the price for the support and maintenance agreement I didn’t renew in January 2019. AND: I will benefit from support and maintenance until January 2020.
SDL Trados: If I bought SDL Trados 2017 in January 2018 and want to upgrade to 2019 in July 2019, I have to pay the upgrade price (225 euros - from time to time there’s a special discount). Without benefiting from any support and maintenance agreement.

Martin Bruckmann . Yes, it is true. MemoQ is extremely powerful, extremely verstile, and yet so easy to use.
When I first used MemoQ, I hardly knew what a CAT tool was at all, but even then it took me only a couple of hours to understand its basics while at the same time getting my project translated, from start to finish.
I have had the luck to discover MemoQ in its early years, and despite its many improvements and enrichments with new features, the main idea behind it remained the same, and it is still as easy and intuitive, even for newcomers to CAT tools, to to get a project on track in no time.
Of course MemoQ can do a lot more than just the basics, but then you will need quite some more time if you want to know all of its awesome advanced features, mainly because you might not so soon come accross all of the possible situations where these are needed. Endless possibilities, really !

Juan Gaviria . I will put it in a few words. MemoQ has lots of features that you will never probably use or need. I think is just a burden to work with MemoQ. There are other CAT tools lots easier to work with and they are free!
