ultimate good

Non-PRO English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general)
Please tell me what does mean “ultimate good”? I found a paper that says:” Ultimate good (from the Latin), highest end or purpose….. If there is a single good, it is growth.” ?

the vision statement should relate to something fundamental about which people can feel passionate. This is likely to be associated with human flourishing, interpersonal relationships, or an ultimate good—that is, things that make life worth living.

It seems that the answers given by Rita and muitoprazer is the same point writers wanted to say. Many thanks, all.

Dear Rita: Thank you for your answer.
RHELLER Aug 22, 2005:
This is typical "business speak" and is commonly heard; similar to politician's usage.
Non-ProZ.com Aug 22, 2005:
Dear Kirill Semenov: Sorry, I forgot to post the entire paragraph. The text speaks about articulating vision statement for big companies.
Non-ProZ.com Aug 22, 2005:
Dear Terence Ajbro:thank you for your suggestion.
Terence Ajbro Aug 22, 2005:
maybe you should interpret "ultimate" good here with "universally" good. I.e. something that all human beings will benefit from (food, clothing, housing, freedom, peace etc)
Non-ProZ.com Aug 22, 2005:
Dear Terence Ajbro,Dear LittleBalu: thanks. I also found some papers which say The ultimate good is God.But what about my text "... the vision statement..."?
Ulrike Kraemer Aug 22, 2005:
I agree with Terence.
Terence Ajbro Aug 22, 2005:
From a religious point of view, the ultimate good can only be God. This has to be an eternal valid moral that does not have human origins. What one man may consider good, could be evil to another man.

arriving at the "common good" in the end

the use of ultimate here implies that some bad things may occur in the process - "in the end" after the analysis, the majority of people will be better off (similar to utilitarianism). This is the field of business ethics.

most desired effect

the most desired effect to be achieved by an initiative,i.e.in politics, the greatest good attainable for the greatest number, the thing hoped to be achieved as a result of a particular course of action, but only realised after completion by hindsight.

summum bonum

I think this is the original Latin expression. It's the final, the highest, the supreme good which is possible.

`The vision statement' may mean a message received by someone (a visionary). A person had a vision sent from the Above or from God, and the main message of the vision is the highest good of all people and any person in particular. The message states the values which are the most important for every human being: flourishing, good interpersonal relationships and the idea of the supreme good for all humans.

Kinda usual `New Age' stuff, I would add from myself ;-) Saying nothing while using beautiful words. :))

For a company, a `vision' may mean the company's final, ultimate goal in a future. Something which cannot be reached in the near future, but some day... Anyway, formulating a vision for a company in such a way is not that far from idealistic `New Aging', I suppose. Way too general and optimistic. ;-)

...would be my interpretation.
"Good" is used as a noun here. "Ultimate good" describes something that is of a high spiritual or ethical value (which, in the end, brings you back to God).

I agree, given the additional context that it is a vision statement for companies. Thank you.
