Now I know that 'toile' can refer to several types of fabric, but it clearly isn't that here; it can also refer to the patterns from which garments will subsequently be mass-produced; but I don't think it is quite that either.
Having worked in a fashion school, I am quite convinced this is referring to the early prototypes of garments that are made in cheap, plain fabric, just to give an idea of the fit and style, prior to making a full-blown prototype in the actual fabrics to be used for the finished garment. But I'm blowed if I can remember what these are called in EN!
Any help appreciated!

the real term is "toile mock up" which can be shortened to toile.
Although "mock up" by itself is most commonly used.
