Russian term or phrase: несоответствие личности клиента
Handbook for sales assistants.

One of the ways of scaring off customers: nesootvetstviye lichnosti klienta.
Therefore sales assistants are to "sootvetstvuite lichnosti klienta" as 'posetitel - eto prezhde vsego chelovek".

Does this mean 'treat as an individual'? I think maybe it has something more to do with finding common ground.

English translation:failure to treat the customer as an individual
Explanation:
Yes, responding/being sensitive to the individual personality/character of the customer. I personally think "treat as an individual" is a very good way of saying this, so несоответствие личности клиента could be expressed as "failure to treat the customer as an individual" or perhaps "insensitivity to the customer's individual needs" etc.

"So, part of the challenge of a company is to create policies to help "minimize" customer hassles. Once the policies are in place, the next challenge is training the employees to understand that the policies are only guidelines, but to *treat the customer as an individual and each situation as unique. One customer may accept one policy, while another may need to be dealt with in a slightly different way, but still achieving the same results*..."

"3.Несоответствие личности клиента

"Если вы не смогли *соответствовать личности покупателя*, уровню его знаний, настроению, типу темперамента – он не станет вашим покупателем! Стоит только начать умничать, как человек сразу же это почувствует и уйдёт!
Отпугнуть потенциального клиента гораздо легче, чем его привлечь!
Как же себя вести?!"

your variant (finding common ground)

Explanation:
I would say that the Russian use of "lichnost' " isn't too correct in itself. I would agree with your understanding of finding a common ground. If the customer is a special person with his or her own needs sale assistants have not to just function but to grasp the need of this very person.
