I have always found it awkward to translate "la maîtrise" except when it is "la maîtrise du japonais ou du français" (a good command of Japanese, etc.).
or "la maîtrise de la situation" (to have a control on the situation".
my problem is with : "la maîtrise de l'outil informatique", "la maîtrise des statistiques", etc.
"a better knowledge of trade statistics" seems weak to me. "a better grasp" too colloquial and "better command" is wrong, and "mastery" irrelevant.

Merci. Belle démonstration! Mes doutes se dissipent peu à peu... |

Comment: "if "a very good command of statistical methods and technologies" is good enough for the UN, it's good enough for me.
Thanks to you lenybee and to the other three answerers for their efforts"

A TOTAL COMMAND OF
Note from asker:
Thanks a lot - "thorough" is certainly right. |
+1
4 hrs
to master commercial statistiques
Despite your apparent rejection of the verb "to master", I suggest that it would be most suitable. It is strong, reflecting the French message.
9 hrs
improve .... skills/efficiency; exert better control over
will sometimes work - improve your IT skills etc.
by the way "la maîtrise de la situation" is more "to have the situation under control"
by the way "la maîtrise de la situation" is more "to have the situation under control"
Note from asker:
I agree: some notion of "skill" rather than knowledge is involved, and that of "exercising control" is there too. Thanks anyway. |
