French term

développer la maîtrise des statistiques du commerce

French to English Other Business/Commerce (general) vocational training
I have always found it awkward to translate "la maîtrise" except when it is "la maîtrise du japonais ou du français" (a good command of Japanese, etc.).
or "la maîtrise de la situation" (to have a control on the situation".

my problem is with : "la maîtrise de l'outil informatique", "la maîtrise des statistiques", etc.

"a better knowledge of trade statistics" seems weak to me. "a better grasp" too colloquial and "better command" is wrong, and "mastery" irrelevant.

to master commercial statistiques

Despite your apparent rejection of the verb "to master", I suggest that it would be most suitable. It is strong, reflecting the French message.
Peer comment(s):

agree Julie Barber : agree, with 'mastering...' you can leave out 'develop'

improve .... skills/efficiency; exert better control over

will sometimes work - improve your IT skills etc.

by the way "la maîtrise de la situation" is more "to have the situation under control"
Note from asker:
I agree: some notion of "skill" rather than knowledge is involved, and that of "exercising control" is there too. Thanks anyway.
