"ésta" era otra mujer que atendía en la frutería.

agree Carol Gullidge : I think this best fits the register. Prefer to keep God and smiting dead out of it, if this is intended for a young audience. I like the others but they come across a bit strong in English for the readership

Either alternative would work but, in my opinion, the second one is funnier and therefore more effective for the punch line of a joke such as this one.
