Creo que es una forma non sancta de caer bien. Me parece que la actitud del rey es indicarle que los "compre" con halagos, con adulacion... con obsecuencia... Si fuera un idioma mas bajo, diriamos "sobarles el lomo", "chuparles las medias",o "lamerles el vaya a saber que"!
