Spanish term

se pusieran las bombas (help with sentence)

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial Anlagenbau
We're talking about a regasification plant here. The text is an incident report about a wrong signal from the absorber's level metering device, which lead to a number of incidents. Obviously the primary pumps were affected as well but I simply don't understand what exactly happened with the pumps. What does "ponerse" mean in this context. Or is it "ponerse a recircular" and the verb is just separated by the rest of the sentence? Thanks a lot in advance!

and the two working primary pumps were set to recirculate

pumps started to recirculate

-las dos bombas... se pusieron a recircular --> both pumps... started to recirculate
-la señal... se pone en IOBAD --> the signal takes (goes to, switches to) the state IOBAD

...and caused the two pumps then in operation to be put into recirculation mode

"...and caused the two pumps then in operation to be put into recirculation mode."

You can change the wording, but that's the correct interpretation of the phrase.

My 2 cents...

I forgot "primary" for "pumps", but it was not part of the question anyway...

agree Nedra Rivera Huntington : Although "caused" belongs at the beginning of the sentence.

The pumps started

I am afraid there is an "en marcha" missing here. That is, the phrase should be "se pusieran en marcha" (I would have said "arrancaran" instead of "se pusieran en marcha", but I DIDN'T write it...)

Grrr I should have read at a slower pace (and in full). I fully agree that it is "se pusieran a recircular" and not as I said "en marcha". And, of course, this is to be carried out by opening / closing the appropriate valves
Note from asker:
Thanks a lot for your answer. I'm just wondering: How does that fit with the end of the sentence ("...que estaban en marcha..."). Doesn't that mean that the pumps WERE already in operation?
