Pre-medical (often shortened to pre-med) is a term used to describe a track an undergraduate student in the United States pursues prior to becoming a medical student. It refers to the activities that prepare an undergraduate student for medical school, such as pre-med coursework, volunteer activities, clinical experience, research, and the application process. In most schools, there is no such thing as a pre-medical major. You can major in anything you want as long as you complete the courses necessary to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and satisfy medical school pre-requisite requirements.

Ce n'est pas comme une prépa, j'imagine, car il n'y a apparemment pas de diplome à la clef, seulement la possibilité de s'inscrire en fac de médecine... des idées ?

You're right but it depends on the country you're talking about; In the States it's as you say a preliminary degree, in Britain and France two years of pre-clinical stats/physio/bio/anatomy etc. Here it seems to be a bit of both !:)
