The author uses "emotional 'legs'" in English as a play on words for "standing up". Since I interpret this "standing up" as "standing up for" and thus "defender", the play on words is no longer appropriate. Thus, what would be the best way to have this concept fit in based on the meaning and the translation that is thus far rendered?
TIA - Mike :)
“Is this another example of your taking the shortcomings of the people you love as a reflection on yourself? Why would you rather believe he’s refusing to do something for you that is within his abilities than the possibility that his not standing up has to do with how he perceives his own emotional ‘legs’?” After a pause to let this sink in, I offer a seemingly casual comment: “By the way, why are you focusing on this all of a sudden? You were looking more comfortable a moment ago.”

soporte emocional
I understand the emotional legs as support. I don't see standing up for yourself in here. You use your physical legs for physical support. You'd use your emotional legs for emotional support.

Hi Mike: As for "standing up," I think you might be right, i.e., "standing up for himself." It could also refer to the idea of doing "the right thing" (like assuming responsibility for his actions), in this case, perhaps, doing what the man's partner may see as his duty or obligation (as a man, boyfriend, husband or life partner).

"asuntos" emocionales
