Dear RNS, Если б Вы знали, насколько Вы правы... Если б только знать о чём она, эта посовица! Русские и украинские пословицы, они есть производное одного менталитета, т.е. исходная точка у них - всеобщее понимание и доступность понимания(в иных случаях и для детей).Если найти ей хоть русский, хоть английский смысловой эквивалент,то он будет звучать, как пародия (не хочу этим никого обидеть).Восток, там же в пословицах "крутизна мысли"!Вполне, эта пословица о человеческих эмоциях, самоконтроле и благодати спадшей на покорного здравому смыслу в борьбе перед собственными желаниями? К сожалению, далее моя экспертиза уже начинает вращаться вокруг одних и тех же точек.

Dear Engtrans, I kindly suggest you to practice your English on this page. It has one particular reason - I think that this English translation of, yes, I most certanly agree, Chinese poem or saying,IMHO this translation is awfully good.Thereby I suggest a method of turning the whole sentence into simpler English first before attempting its Russian translation. Something like "Let agressive guards to leave 'something', it would guarantee your safety in stealing from their treasure chests".What you say?

Александра, но вы-то почему пишете по-английски? Дело не в том, есть поговорка про медведя и мед или нет. Если это действительно не английская пословица, то, на мой взгляд, и заменять ее пословицей не следует, а надо просто благозвучно перевести. Посему мое исходное предложение искать подходящие эквиваленты теряет смысл.

It is written in a form of a proverb, though it also reminds me English translations of some sayings of aborinals ( they sound like 'bylina'), African or Australian.I'm sure there should be Russian idiom about a bear and the honey, but it slipped off...

I don't see your version But mine is the following "Кто дождется, когда пчелы улетят из улья, тот не будет пробовать мед распухшими губами". It's customary to translate "Eastern wizardry" rather than try to find approximate equivalents. As opposed to proverbs.

Source Having had some I exposure to those things I **suspect** it may be a translation of Chinese proverb, the style looks familiar. And now you want it translated into Russian. Hmm, makes it inetersting. Anyway, my version below.

Well, I assume that if it were a real proverb you, being native spoken, would have heard smth about it. Then, taking the nature of the text into account I think it may be a "stylized proverb". Well, after all it's not difficult to translate :)

That sounds seriously If you're right then my idea to replace it with equivalent Russian proverb is totaly wrong, and I have to translate it literally. But are you really sure?

neutral Alexandra Taggart : То, что там говорится "не спеши!" - это определённо.Но смысл другой:"Дождись нужного момента, когда мёд покажется мёдом, пока "что-то"злое не свалит,мёд мёдом казаться не будет."

Тут важно подчеркнуть не столько эффективность, сколько безопасность политики выжидания. Поэтому не более стандартное дальше будешь.

neutral Alexandra Taggart : There is a technical trick on behalf of the author.Joe, supposedly, was a man speaking out wisdom, right? Nothing stops the author to place any recorded ,say, American Idian "wise saying"in the mouth of his char.God knows where Joe picked that up from.
