Spanish term

de a

Spanish to English Other Law (general) tobacco legislation
Is something missing here or is there a typo? Should this translate as "up to"? I want to be absolutely accurate to the source text but I can't find this anywhere I've looked and couldn't imagine something so small can be so annoying (!). It comes from tobacco legislation in Chile. Will definitely appreciate some help. Many thanks.
Context: "Estas advertencias deberan, ademas, circular en forma simultanea, **de a** 10 distintas advertencias por periodos de 12 meses..."

Discussion

Karen Friedman (asker) Jan 16, 2011:
No wonder you do not see "de a" in the current law. The reason is that my document contains amendments to the existing law. The discussion was great--I feel so much better learning that de hecho "de a" es un chilenismo. Mil gracias a todos mis estimados colegas. ¡Me han salvado la salud mental! :-)
mediamatrix (X) Jan 15, 2011:
Chilenismo or just plain nonsense? As MEW suggests, this is very informal phasing, quite unusual even in the legislation of super-relaxed Chile. Curiously enough, the source text extract given by Karen does not appear in the current version of Law 19.419 "REGULA ACTIVIDADES QUE INDICA RELACIONADAS CON EL TABACO"(see http://www.leychile.cl/Navegar?idNorma=30786 ), and although it contains several references to 'advertencias' (govt health warnings in this case) there's no mention of ten of anything.

Ten of these notices should be circulated simultaneously during periods of 12 months.

The way the sentence is written leads me to assume that the total number of "advertencias" is well more than 10, but that only 10 will circulate/be distributed during the course of a each designated 12-month period.

It would be helpful to know the surrounding text but, at least in isolation, I don't see the need to translate "ademas" or to replicate the syntax of the Spanish.

The kind of wording I suggest here avoids trapping yourself in replicating the oddity of what looks to be poorly drafted Spanish.

Suerte.
