Spanish term
repito con plena consciencia
Spanish to English
Social Sciences
Religion
The following is a sentence from an article. According to side research, "...y de nada más" appears to be part of the original quote by St. John of the Cross, even though here that fragment is placed outside the quotation marks. But my problem is that it sounds really awkward to say, "I repeat with full awareness." I'm thinking that this might require a bit of literary license to express the idea that the writer likely wants to put extra emphasis on the, "y de nada más" bit. Any ideas?
De ahí que San Juan de la Cruz pudiera sostener la conocida frase, ya antes mencionada: «en el atardecer de nuestra existencia se nos examinará del amor»… ¡y de nada más!, ***repito con plena conciencia.***
TIA!

Yes, indeed, "repeat" does sound awkward.

Robert Forstag
: "With full awareness" is not idiomatic and "with full conscience" is not English.

I repeat, fully aware of what I say.
The actual citation is "A la tarde te examinarán en el amor; aprende a amar como Dios quiere ser amado y deja tu condición."
So the "¡y de nada más!" is your author's emphasis.
So the "¡y de nada más!" is your author's emphasis.

I am well aware of the implications of this statement.
Start a new sentence following "y de nada mas!"
Neither of the previous suggestions sound natural, in my view.
Suerte.

And no need to use "repeat"/"reiterate"/"insist" in the translation.

: did St. Paul really speak like a 20th century politician?//OK my remark would equally apply to St. John of the Cross

I did not think this was a citation from St. Paul, and I don't see the suggestion I've offered as particularly reflecting the usage of a 20th century politician. // Read the text carefully: A later author, writing in modern Spanish, is *citing* S.J. of C

I say again, in conscience
I think this needs a register suitable to the era (St. Paul) rather than a modern-day English style

: If the individual quoted is in turn citing St. John of the Cross (1542-1591), then he cannot by definition be St. Paul.

I repeat, aware that I am doing so (i.e. that I am repeating myself)
this is one possible interpretation: the writer is stating that he is aware he is repeating himself, so that the reader does not think the writer is simply being careless.

David Ronder
: Yes, 'in all conscience' is what I was thinking, don't know why most answers assume 'awareness' is the sense here. 'I echo' is good: or 'Again I say...'?
