This is for somebody who has a "3ème cycle" diploma from the Ecole du Louvre, and is looking for its name in (American) English.
Although she did basically write the equivalent of a thesis, the Ecole du Louvre has told her she can't call her diploma a PhD because the Ecole du Louvre is not a university, but must refer to it instead as a 'diplôme d'établissement'.
Any ideas how to capture this nuance in English?

This concept is fairly specific to the French education system. I don't think there is a direct equivalent in the UK and I admit to complete ignorance over the US system. Not sure it can be referred to as a degree.
But I think this makes it reasonably clear.

How about "college's or school's (pace Writeaway) own postgraduate diploma", although that doesn't differentiate it from an MA equivalent. The only other way I can think of is to call it a "PhD equivalent", but that may well not be allowed.

| Thanks, Gilla - I like your last suggestion very much, and will probably propose it and tell the client to explain why it's not a doctorate (she's using my translation to apply for a PhD in the States and the school she wants to study at is saying er, but don't you already have one?!) |

: I wouldn't call the Ecole du Louvre a 'college', not even in US English /It's a Grande Ecole, Which would make ENA and Normale-Sup 'colleges' as well. Don't think so.

I completely agree with writeaway - use "diplôme de recherche approfondie" and explain it, but if I was going to gloss "diplôme de recherche approfondie" and suggest something similar to a PhD, I would say "advanced research degree". It's the research element that distinguishes doctorates from other degrees.

I think this might get the level of research involved and as a Master's is usually a pre-requisite to getting on a Ph.D program(me) this may cover that angel. However she cannot call it a doctorate but pre-doctorate level research might work
