Spanish term

tomar fondos del público

taking public funds OR taking funds from the public?

Muchas gracias por sus sugerencias.

Discussion

Muriel Vasconcellos Jun 17, 2011:
@Mariana In your context, I see that that would be the interpretation, but it's not unusual to refer to the public power as "el publico" - which was your original doubt, if I'm not mistaken.
Mariana Solanet (asker) Jun 17, 2011:
Hi Muriel, "el público" in Spanish refers to the public as in customers (companies or individuals) who deposit their money in the bank. "Fondos públicos", in which "público" is an adjective refers to the State. As Patinba has stated, it's taking funds/deposits from the public.

This was exactly my doubt! Because "taking public funds" sounded to me like "taking funds from the State", I agree taking deposits is much better. Thank you!
