La mejor forma de tener un feliz ascenso...

Spanish to English Other Tourism & Travel Mountain Ascent Recommendations
Se trata de un folleto turístico con recomendaciones para el ascenso a una montaña, por lo que la frase debe ser lo más breve y efectiva posible.

La frase completa es la siguiente:

"La mejor forma de tener un feliz ascenso, es cuidarse, cuidar al otro y a la naturaleza."

Por FELIZ ascenso entiendo que significa lograr llegar a la cima sin que hayan ocurrido incidentes o accidentes.

Pensé en "the best way of getting to the summit successfully"....

Sugerencias? Gracias!!

Michael,

The word "happy" here would mean "without accidents/incidents"?

The best way to ensure a successful climb/ascent...

I think 'climb' sounds good in everyday language, 'ascent' would be more 'del gremio'.

"... ironing board to try their hand at reaching the summit. ... learning about the fundamentals of a safe and successful climb. ... These techniques included the rest step, plunge step ..." (www.catlin.edu/news/middle-school/extreme-ironing-on-the-su...

The word 'successful' por ahí connotes/includes the reaching of the summit.

The best way to get to the top is to...

I think this could work. You also have a slight play on words because "to get to the top" means "to succeed". Or in this case, it would be the top of the mountain.

Spanish term (edited): La mejor forma de tener un feliz ascenso, es cuidarse,

Remember, a safe ascent is a happy ascent.

This is clearly a serious notice with a “happy” (friendly) tone to it, but a serious notice, nonetheless. So I would render it in the style that serious notices are often written for English thinkers.

Like you say, it should be as short and effective as possible; to achieve this, it needs to be as explicitly clear to the English reader as possible. So I would add “Remember” at the beginning, which is intended to actually get the reader to “remember” what they’re reading (a good idea for serious notices). I would also break the sentence up (see below), to make it more effective (i.e., more “rememberable”).

Any sort of literal translation here is most likely not going to have the intended effect on the end (English) reader, which is to get them to remember the important matter of reaching the summit without accidents/incidents. That is why I would render it that bit longer in the English than in the Spanish (a rare occurrence!). It’s still a very short and effective message in my view.

Cheers.
Example sentence:

“La mejor forma de tener un feliz ascenso, es cuidarse, cuidar al otro y a la naturaleza.”

“Remember, a safe ascent is a happy ascent. Always take care of yourself, others and the environment.”
