We can't provide a meaningful answer without proper context, ie the Italian sentence. It seems to me that the choice of the word "macchina" is significant, and Barbara's answer may well be right.

You didn't give the exact sentence, so you may have to adapt, but this is the phrase we Brits use (68000 hits on google)

there is also the phrase 'smear campaign' if referred to a specific smear you want to attach to someone ('il metodo Boffi' for example).
Mud-slinging is more of a general exchange of insults
