fellowships

English Science Government / Politics ordinamento universitario
The text I’m translating is a report sent by Vannevar Bush, director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development, in 1945 to President Roosevelt, arguing on the necessary support Government must give to scientific research after war. I can't understand the difference, in the following sentence, between RESEARCH and FELLOWSHIPS ( fellowships are money for research, aren't them?)

It is clear that if we are to maintain the progress in medicine which has marked the last 25 years, the Government should extend financial support to basic medical research in the medical schools and in the universities, through grants both for research and for fellowships.
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Charlesp

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

salaried academic position

I think the difference here is that a fellowship pays the wages of the researcher, while to conduct the research itself there are costs such as for materials, buildings/rent, electricity etc.

I think definition 4a applies, i.e. research funding is to an institution, fellowship is a grant to a fellow in an institution.

post-doctoral research fellow

Both Jack and Tania are on the right track but the main difference between "research" in general and fellowship is that the latter already has a doctorat so the research is likely to be at a higher level

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research_fellow
A research fellow is a research position at a university or similar research institution, usually for academic staff or faculty members. A research fellow may act either as an independent investigator or under the supervision of a principal investigator.
In contrast to a research assistant or research officer, the position of research fellow normally requires a doctoral degree, or equivalent work experience for instance in industry and research centers. Some research fellows undertake postdoctoral research or have some moderate teaching responsibilities. Research fellow positions vary in different countries and academic institutions. In some cases, they are permanent with the possibility of promotion, while in other instances they are temporary..."

Some fellows are funded by universities while some receive other research grants
