The widening of the gauge allow the wheel-set to achieve the desired radial difference. Gauge widening in sharp curves actually prolongs the life of the high leg rail due to the fact that it minimises the rail and flange contact.

We firstly lifted out the slack on the high leg of the curve before we lifted out the slack on the low leg of the curve. The radius was calculated and the elevation was set to the correct value.
