Y odio las respuestas sin plasticidad. Pero la palabra "comer" me hace pensar, de nuevo, en una imagen que no he puesto en la novela y en la que he pensado mucho después de haberla terminado.

I would use the second option from the Oxford Spanish, and from that have arrived at “meaningless”, which is what the guy’s response is.
