German term

Rückraupe

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering machinery
Comes from a dispute regarding the production of a belt conveyor system and ash dump. Most of the context is legal, so not much help for this term:

"Am 17. September 2014 hatten wir bereits Unterlagen zur benötigten Ausrüstung für das Rücken der Bandanlage auf der Kippe und Antworten zu Fragen betreffend die Rückraupe übermittelt."

You can get an idea of what it is from google images (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Rückraupe&biw=1536&bih=730... but absolutely no idea what this is called in English.

Thanks in advance.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Yorkshireman Sep 18, 2014:
@Johannes Of course we can - to convert it into a Rückraupe.

A pipelayer/side boom crawler is equipped with precisely the equipment required for moving/shifting conveyor belts, it is used for this purpose, and is also called a Rückraupe, anyone who took the time to view and read my references has seen it in action - so where is your problem?

Rücken, or, to be more precise, Holzrücken, is limited to forestry and is more or less perfectly defined for this purpose in the answer you provided - which I also confirmed as being so for this particular industry as an addendum to my answer. I could have disagreed, but the information content was useful in nailing down what a Rückraupe isn't.
Johannes Gleim Sep 18, 2014:
@ Yorkshireman We can equip a caterpillar or crawler with any accessory for lifting or moving. The point is that we have no evidences about the construction or method. Therefore we cannot restrict the translation to a special crawler (caterpillar or pipelayer) or accessory (blade or boom).

After lot of research I concluded that the general term "Rücken" has no real equivalent translation in English, which encompasses all the German significations and proposed to paraphrase the sentence.
Yorkshireman Sep 18, 2014:
@Johannes Thank you for repeating (although not confirming) my alternative answers - pipelayer/Rohrverleger - which, as the context here is different, I have described as side boom crawlers (another common term)

A simple crawler or has neither lifting gear nor a dozer blade - the conveyor has to be lifted before it is moved.

The vehicles used have weights of 40 to 60 tonnes to counteract the weight of the conveyors to be moved - quite a bit of which is a counterweight on an outrigger to prevent the vehicle toppling!

I must admit that I rather admire your "Beharrlichkeit" in ignoring the references and pictures I posted :-)
Johannes Gleim Sep 18, 2014:
Rohrleger oder Planierraupe? Extract from Yorkshireman's link:

Weltweit findet man Rohrverleger auch Pipelayer genannt überall dort wo Wasser- Öl- oder Gasleitungen verlegt werden. In Deutschland werden sie überwiegend bei RWE Power und dort in den Tagebauen des Rheinischen Reviers eingesetzt. Sie dienen hier zum Rücken von Bandanlagen, sind aber auch besonders für das Wechseln von Fördergurten geeignet (Bild 1).
http://www.rdb-ev.de/Datentauschordner/2011/bb_06_2011.pdf
Note: pipelayers can used as well as crawerls for moving the belt conveyor, the context says nothing about the method or the machinery.

@ Thomas: Do you know something about the type of machine (crawler or pipelayer) or how this "Rücken" will be effected?
Yorkshireman Sep 18, 2014:
What the context does say is... ...that the vehicle is a RÜCKraupe, NOT a RÜCKEraupe.

A Rückraupe is a side boom crawler, a Rückeraupe is a logging crawler aka in the industry as a "logging cat".

Another reference I posted long ago describes/explains the entire process of moving/shifting a conveyor with Rückraupen and shows one of them in use: http://tinyurl.com/mpsz6z5

Here's a picture of several of them shifting a conveyor at Garzweiler:

Johannes Gleim Sep 18, 2014:
shifting or lifting? The contexts says nothing about constructional Details of the "Rückraupe", especially nothing about any possible boom. It is also probable that the tractor/caterpillar moves the conveyor belt with its blade.
Yorkshireman Sep 17, 2014:
Unklar? It is, in my opinion, a rather difficult task to PUSH anything with a crane mounted on the SIDE of a tracked vehicle.

The action with a side boom crawler is lifting the object and moving it forwards (or backwards, or to one side), for example, in this case, very probably to spread the conveyed material over another area (or to start a new heap). To push it, you might just as well use a bulldozer. To pull it or drag it, any kind of vehicle mounted winch or a simple towbar hitch and cable would do the trick.

But it doesn't really matter - the vehicle is the question, not the method
Johannes Gleim Sep 17, 2014:
Thomas Roberts (asker) Sep 17, 2014:
agree That was the cause of pasting Kranraupe by mistake into the previous question (now deleted).
Yorkshireman Sep 17, 2014:
Can be misleading... ...as a Rückraupe and Kranraupe are two names for the same machine.

The designation in English can also be misleading, as pipelayers (generic name) are used in many industries, not just for pipe laying.

In fact, these side-mounted cranes on caterpillar tracks are a modification of caterpillar tractors for many purposes, including "rücken" = shifting of conveyor belts in opencast mining (Braunkohle/lignite) or on disposal sites, for instance for fly ash from power stations.
Coqueiro Sep 17, 2014:
Pro or Non-Pro is the question: Are you sure that this question could be answered by any bilingual person without the aid of a dictionary?
This is not about persons with specialist technical knowledge!
Thomas Roberts (asker) Sep 17, 2014:
It's a straight translation which any person (bilingual or not) with specialist technical knowledge should know.
I've also on various occasions received objections that my questions shouldn't be classed as pro, so at least posting as non-pro saves us wasting time and effort discussing that.
writeaway Sep 17, 2014:
Why is this posted as non-pro? Is this something any bilingual person would know without looking it up?

caterpillar side boom / tracked pipelayer / side boom crawler and others

Generally used for pipelaying - the caterpillar sideboom is a tracked tractor with a crane jib on the side. An example is the Cat 589.

Also called a tracked pipelayer, side boom crawler, crawler- tractor/side boom, crawler with side boom or crawler tractor side boom crane - it all depends on the manufacturer.

Examples of these are used at the Garzweiler opencast mining site.

International manufactures a crawler with side boom with the designation TD-25

http://www.heavyequipmentforums.com/showthread.php?9613-Larg... one of the posts in this forum shows two at work.

Here's the reference to the "Rückraupen" / "Kranraupen" at work in Garzweiler - described as a Rückraupe, Rohrleger, Pipelayer and Rohrverleger

--------------------------------------------------

The great advantage of a side boom crawler is that the object to be moved can be shifted while the tractor moves forwards rather than pulling it perpendicular to the object with a rear mounted boom, jib or winch.

Asker: my choice would be side boom crawler, although caterpillar is a recognised term for tracked tractors, despite it being a brand name.

BTW 2;

A Rücketraktor (English: logging tractor) is a vehicle, usually wheeled, used in forestry for pulling felled trees out of the underbrush - tracked or wheeled excavators are often used for this purpose by replacing the bucket on the end of the backhoe with chains that are hitched around one end of the log.

Agricultural tractors can be used for logging by fitting a skidder attachment - a lever and chain mechanism attached to the rear hydraulic or mechanical lifting gear (usually used for raising a plough) that lifts the front end of a log off the ground to make it easier to pull without snagging.

Interestingly enough, although these vehicles have generally replaced Rückepferde, horses are increasingly being used in environmentally-sensitive forest areas as the damage to the ground is much less.

Here's a National Geographic video on horse logging (Rückepferde are logging horses)

In forestry, a Harvester - which fells trees, strips the trunk of its branches and cuts logs to size, also has a towing facility for skidding (towing) logs.

Eine Rückraupe ist eine Raupe mit beweglichem,
seitlichem Kranausleger und Rückrollenkopf
zum Versetzen, also zum Rücken, einer Bandanlage.
Sie zieht die Bandanlage in annähernder
Parallelfahrt zur Seite. Die bis dato eingesetzte
Technik – Komatsu D 155A – ist mit Rückköpfen
ausgerüstet, die nur manuell unter teilweise
körperlich schweren Anforderungen betätigt
wird. Das Ein- und Ausspannen der Vorrichtung
erfolgt direkt über entsprechende Kipphebel des
Rückkopfes und erfordert immer, dass der Fahrer
aussteigt. Ausrutschen, Fallen, Quetschen,
all das ist nicht ausgeschlossen. Kommen noch
widrige Wetter- und Sichtverhältnisse dazu,
wird es ganz schwierig.

A rather more exotic Rückraupe is shown together with various others, like a DET or Konmatsu, on this site - a converted Russian or ex-NVA T-55 tank:

skidding dozer

I'm familiar with the term 'Rücken' (skidding) from the timber industry, but it seems to be used here as well. Instead of timber the belt is moved (skidded).

=>
“On September 17, 2014, we already submitted documents and answered questions in regard to the required equipment (bulldozers, crawlers, caterpillars, etc.) for moving/baking/shifting/skidding the conveyor system."
Or shorter
“On September 17, 2014, we already submitted documents and answered questions about the required moving/backing/shifting/skidding equipment for the conveyor system."

neutral Yorkshireman : A Rücketraktor is usually a wheeled logging tractor used in forestry - it replaced Rückepferde, which, incidentally are increasingly being used again in environmentally sensitive areas. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rückepferd

The term "Rücken" is independent of the power source (horse or crawler) and the application field (forestry or mining).
