"La póliza indica lo siguiente:'En caso de que el asegurado no suscribiera o presentara la documentación legal pertinente solicitada por la compañía, impidiendo a esta ejercer su derecho a recupero material o legal, la compañía podrá deducir el valor de ésta de la indemnización propuesta al asegurado, de acuerdo al mecanismo de valorización de restos que utilice la compañía.' En nuestro informe No. xxx indicamos que en el reclamo en cuestión el recupero material correspondía a los restos de la maquinaria afectada, mientras que no existía recupero legal."
Mi problema básicamente es con el término "recupero material o legal". Normalmente en los informes encuentro referencias a salvamento y/o recupero (salvage and/or recovery), pero aquí están especificando el tipo de recupero: material o legal, y no he encontrado referencias. Tal vez el recupero material podría traducirse como salvage si es que no existe un término exacto, pero para recupero legal no creo que legal recovery funcione.

I agree with you that "recupero material" means salvage: if the car is written off and the insurance company pays out, the wrecked car becomes its property, for example.
"Recupero legal" means recovery by legal means, and I believe this refers to subrogation.

So it means that the company that has paid a claim assumes the insured's legal rights of recovery.

Enquiries are sometimes appropriate to ensure that salvage and subrogation receipts are correctly accounted for."

I'm sure it's the same thing, but in English I can't find any alternative term, like "legal recovery", in common use. I think it would be best to use "subrogation".

Unsure whether the process is as narrow as subrogation - though an ingenious extrapolation - perhaps the latter half of the term means using legal processes on paper like a contract or conveyance.
