Hello,

I am translating a web page from Italian to English and I cannot find a suitable translation for this sentence:

"Il contratto "è legge tra le parti". " I'm thinking of "The contract is legally binding for the parties" or "the contract is enforceable between the parties". Please note I'm not native English and this is part of an internship for my graduation degree.

If you simply write " the parties" then that could mean two parties, or more than two parties! Therefore, if it doesn't matter precisly how manty there are , then just use 'the parties'.

Asker: Sorry if I ask but the idea of "defining" how many parties are involved in the contract isn't it implicit if I write "the parties"? I am asking because as I said I'm not English native, plus I'm just a student, so it is not easy for me understand these technical subtleties. Thanks for your help

The contract is binding between the parties in the sense that it can be invoked by each party against the other(s).

However, to suggest that it is binding for the parties is to imply that persons not a party to the contract can invoke rights under it. This is only possible if expressly specified in the contract.

In Latin it is "pacta sunt servanda". You can Google the term.

Regarding the points awarded for this response, the response is incorrect. The correct term is "law between the parties" and it is a term of art and if you don't believe me then just Google "law between the parties" to find out.
