The literal rendering grates on my nerves.

Matorral is brush or brushwood, but grass sort of undulates (waves) in the wind, which is why I chose "wave" for the "saludaba" part. I must admit it reads badly...
I reckon the only solution will be to make up a similarly onirically sounding phrase without trying too hard to stick to the original...
