За границей прочно утвердилось греческое название нефти - петролеум, образованное двумя словами: "петро" - камень, "олум" - масло.

If it is important in this text, you can write so.
Vladimir Zakharov Sep 7, 2015:
Then I would simply add "The *English* word petroleum ..." to my proposed answer
Arabella Bishop (asker) Sep 7, 2015:
The text explains the origin of this word and compares its use "за границей" and in Russia (Russian speaking countries); I think, to preserve the client's idea, I can write 'In the English speaking countries' ...
Vladimir Zakharov Sep 7, 2015:
In addition to the answer I believe this sentence (or the whole text, for that matter) should be "transcreated," however much I dislike the word. You can't write for English readers about what happens "за границей" the same way as you would do "for domestic use."

Neither do I think that "прочно утвердилось" has any crucial role here. Just two clichéd words with no real weight.

The word petroleum comes from the Greek roots "petra," meaning rock, and "oleum," meaning oil

IMHO, this won't make any sense when translated literally. There is no word neft' to compare against.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Andrey Svitanko : Не не... Здесь суть не в том, откуда слово происходит, точнее не только в этом, а еще в том, что она прочно утвердилось за границей, нельзя выкидывать часть предложения. / тогда просто "foreign countries" просто убрать. Оставить только, что утвердилось.

Вопрос на засыпку: для англоязычного читателя что будет этой "заграницей"?

Foreign countries просто уберите, если что, а то для англоязычного читателя foreign это уже не те foreign, что для нас.
