Here's an interesting one for all comers:
It's from a Mexican document about how prisons have changed over time.
It provides a context of how prisons used to be places for punishment and it compares what prisons used to be called with what they are called now.
To give an example, first, it mentions the idea of how prisons used to be called dungeons, oubliettes and galleys, and were places of torture. It then goes on like this:
"la penitenciaria es un sitio donde se cumple penitencia, pero en un sentido más amplio; la penitenciaria en realidad, se distingue de la prisión porque guarda relación con un establecimiento destinado para el cumplimiento de las sentencias largas de los condenados..." So far so good, i.e. penitentiary vs. prison.
But then "Los Reclusorios y Centros de Readaptación Social reciben su nombre como resultado del cambio iniciado en beneficio de la población interna, respondiendo a la necesidad de preparar para la vida en libertad..."
So, what would you call a "reclusorio" in this context?

This would be another option.
In English you have the word 'recluse', which, although I know it does not mean the same as 'recluso' in Spanish, I think they must come from the same word root. I looked up words related to 'recluse' in a Thesaurus and came across 'confined', so I thought 'place of confinement' might be the closest option.
As far as I can see, 'reclusorio' does not appear to be a place for short-term confinement, but just another word for 'prisión'.

I'm not so sure he's using 'reclusorio' in a standard way, but I think this is the idea he's trying to convey, i.e., a facility where it is hoped that a certain degree of rehabilitation also takes place.

This may be an instance where a decision needs to be made to either render the author's words exactly as they appear, blemishes and all, or to convey their intent. Many translators might opt for the latter approach. Although 'reclusorio' might be correctly rendered here as 'detention center' (which is why I gave David's translation an agree), the context suggests the author may have meant to say something much more akin to a (long-term) correctional facility.

reclusorios son muy peculiares, no creo tengan traducción. Pero si debes traducirlo puede ser "detention centre" pero igual no creo que comunique bien.
