Patients are being reintegrated into the workplace after therapy for anxiety disorders or depression:

Sollte darauf geachtet werden, dass Patienten, die zu einer Überforderung am Arbeitsplatz neigen und diesbezüglich z.B. angeleitet werden, sich abzugrenzen und einen angemessenen Ausgleich zwischen Be- und Entlastungen zu schaffen, kein allgemeines Schutz- bzw. Schonungsverhalten entwickeln, das die erfolgreiche Wiedereingliederung gefährden könnte [Linden und Strauß, 2012].

My draft:
It should be ensured that patients who tend to be overwhelmed at the workplace and who are therefore advised to set themselves apart and create a reasonable balance between burdening and unburdening themselves, do not develop a general protective and [??] behavior which could jeopardize their successful reintegration [Linden and Strauß, 2012].

There are several questionable parts of this sentence (!), but I'll limit it to one: I can't figure out what the difference might be between Schutzverhalten and Schonungsverhalten. Maybe there is none in English? Unfortunately the reference given there is behind a pay wall.
