Rather than referring to recording the default, "notificada su rebeldía" refers to notifying the defendant that he has been declared in default:
"La declaración de rebeldía se hace por resolución y para que surta efecto tiene que ser notificada al demandado por correo si su domicilio es conocido y si no, mediante edictos..."
"En cuanto a las notificaciones, solo se notificará la declaración de rebeldía y la sentencia. ..."

A comment for Robert (for lack of space below):
I think it would be fine to change "upon" to "following" or "after". The main point is that "notificada su rebeldía" refers to notifying the absent defendant that he has been declared in default, rather than his/her being notified of the "judgment" that will eventually be rendered against him. As noted in the civpro textbook I quoted above, absent defendants have the right to receive two notices ("notificación de declaración en rebeldía" and "la sentencia"; Bernadette's text refers to the former.

The appropriate gender and number of the pronoun needs to be inserted accordingly
"Following" rather than "upon" would really seem the appropriate word here, given that the latter would imply that the delivery of the notification would in and of itself trigger some other event or condition.
Example of proper use of "upon":
Upon notification of the court's judgment, Mr. Smith will have 15 calendar days to lodge an appeal of said judgment.

Hi, Rebecca. I understand. It just seems to me that "after" or "following" is a better fit than "upon," for the reasons I explained in my answer, and that the difference between the alternatives - while not enormous - is also not trivial. :)
