French term

un moment musical et champêtre

French to English Other Tourism & Travel
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a nice way to phrase this in English but having trouble in coming up with something good. Does anyone have any ideas?

Here's the full sentence for context:

Envie d’un moment musical et champêtre, une conférence ... Un service sur mesure !

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Nikki Scott-Despaigne Mar 28, 2017:
I think "bucolic" is not a good idea here as you have "bucolic" in the sentence just above. That said, "bucolic picnic" is probably better rendered as "picnic in the country(side)", which would leave "bucolic" up for grabs later. The only thing is "bucolic" is used more ordinarily in French than in Englihs. Without seeking to dumb this down, "bucolic" has more literary overtones in English.

"Champêtre" conjures up images of something "rustic" in English, but I like the idea of "outdoor" for "champêtre" which has been suggested. You could then use "country(side)" for the picnic and your text will avoid anything bucolic and be more authentic for a UK reader, I'm sure.

I'm with Polyglot! 'Bucolic musical interlude ' sounds fine!; a very neat solution.
polyglot45 Mar 28, 2017:
you could perhaps talk about a bucolic musical interlude

The document gives descriptions of group tours available in the region. However this tour doesn't mention music anywhere else at all, I think it's just given as an example of other things that are available. Here's the whole paragraph for more context:

Peut-être souhaiteriez-vous prolonger votre journée en dégustant les spécialités d’un de nos restaurateurs, en fonction de votre budget ou en profitant de cette escapade pour faire un pique-nique bucolique ? Complétez votre journée et découvrez nos visites thématiques.
Envie d’un moment musical et champêtre, une conférence ... Un service sur mesure !

I might have a few thoughts (the pastoral symphony springs to mind), but as other posters have said, we need more context. I suggest you ask the client exactly what is involved in this particular tour and go from there.
Tony M Mar 28, 2017:
@ Asker The producer of this tourist brochure must have had soemthing specific in mind, otherwise they wouldn't have linked 'musical' and 'champêtre' — if you can't work it out from the rest of your document, then you'll have to ask them what it's all about.
What exactly is the document about, overall, and what is it promoting?
cmf33 (asker) Mar 28, 2017:
I'm afraid there isn't much context linked to music. It relates to guided tours (of a canal) available to tourists, as well as potential add-ons (e.g. eating in a nice restaurant) to these tours
Carol Gullidge Mar 28, 2017:
more context, please! What is this "moment musical et champêtre"? Is this about anything specific such as an outdoor concert, or is the writer waxing lyrical about something quite different?

In order to help you, we need to know exactly what is being described - also other info such as the register, etc

outdoor musical performance

Or "musical picnic".

Here's a similar example:

Moment musical et apéro champêtre
autour de notre roulotte
Merci d’apporter boisson et / ou biscuits, tartes, autres…

agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Forget the picnic idea here as it is in the sentence before. Your idea of "outdoor" here is perfect.
1 hr
neutral B D Finch : That could be in a city square, which would hardly be very "champêtre".

open air musical interlude

I like the sound of

1) open-air musical interlude which gives me the image of a brief and informal musical performance as background to, or a break from other longer activities.
You could use the adjective rural (which is closer to the French) but I would go for open air as it is often used in the UK for live music and entertainment performed outdoors.

other ideas:
2) musical moments in a natural setting
3) musical entertainment in the open-air
4) rural musical moment/interlude

Also new this year was our first “Enchanted Evening”, an open air musical interlude graciously hosted by Bob and Lynne Neal at their new historic home, Cro’ Hurst, on Elkhart Hill. To say it was the perfect evening, beautiful music, fabulous setting, and delicious food would not do it justice.
