Spanish term

mercados de referencia

Spanish to English Marketing Advertising / Public Relations
Presentation of a jewelry exhibition.

"esta feria también recibirá a 500 compradores seleccionados de los principales mercados de referencia"

I don't know if this is referring to:
1) reference markets
2) relevant markets (which I found as a translation, but believe is a different concept "mercados relevantes")
3) aforementioned/previously cited markets (no specific markets are given in the preceding text, there is only mention of "los mercados clave de todo el mundo" in the previous paragraph, without going into more detail).

ES-MX>EN-US.

Can anyone help with this one?

Discussion

neilmac Jul 22, 2017:
I'd usually post "reference market", but I suspect I might get shot down in flames, and I can't be bothered defending it. Usually when I see it in Spain, it just means the most relevant or key market for the business in question. I understand it to be largely synonymous with "benchmark" or "go-to", EXCEPT when it specifically refers to geographical reference.

key markets

My dictionary reference gives "benchmark" and "go-to", which is the right kind of idea. It means the most important markets.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you for all your input. From your answers and the discussions I gathered that in my context the meaning was "most important", and in the end I simply went for "major markets" for "principales mercados de referencia". ¡Saludos!"

relevant markets

Rebecca Jower has Mercado relevante and Mercado de referencia listed as synonyms in her lexicon. Under the 11.2.2 Abuso de posición dominante (Abuse of Dominant Position), 11. Derecho de la competencia (Antitrust Law). Of course this based on Spanish law and the term in your text may have a slight variation (since the same business term can be defined in different ways by business professionals, depending on who and their business approach/strategy). Here's the term list from that lexicon:

Mercado relevante; mercado de referencia > Relevant market
Mercado relevante de produto > Relevant product market
Mercado relevante geográfico > Relevant geographic market

EUR-Lex has Mercado de Referencia as "Relevant Market" in the English version:

neutral philgoddard : It's not about EU terminology or antitrust law, it's just ordinary, everyday Spanish meaning "important".
