Salut, je traduis un document sur le transport de marchandises dangereuses en Afrique du Sud. Une partie du document porte sur les exigences auxquelles les véhicules de transport doivent se conformer. Il s'agit d'une pièce qui figure généralement sur la pare brise des véhicules, mais je ne sais pas à quoi ce terme fait référence.

“D” will appear on the license disc mounted in the windscreen.

This seems to be like the old British tax disc (formerly commonly, but incorrectly, known as a "road fund licence"). So, I think this Canadian example might be the best name for it, even if the actual regulations differ.

neutral Thomas T. Frost : The old French tax disc was called vignette. You may still be able to find them on old cars in France if you look around. Some drivers kept all the previous years' vignettes as collections on the windscreen. It was much like the British one.

I have an insurance vignette on my windscreen and a local déchetterie access vignette too. So one needs to be specific.
agree Tony M : I agree, since it seems to me here important to specify WHICH 'vignette', i.e. what it is used for, among the many confusing possibilities in FR.

It's called a license disc and if you google for '"South Africa" "licence disc"', the pictures are very like the British ones. They are vehicle licences. In France you don't display a vehicle licence on the windscreen.//See Daryo's ref. below.

C'est le terme le plus courant, en France, pour ce genre d'autocollant officiel (cf. vignette Crit'Air)
On peut préciser "vignette ronde" si l'on veut.

neutral B D Finch : The French system isn't the same. The SA system seems to be derived from the British (now defunct) round tax disc.//Re Thomas's comment below, the "vignette" on my car is from my insurance company, so not a "licence disc".

agree Thomas T. Frost : Before France abolished the tax disc, when the tax was abolished, it was called vignette, so I don't really understand B D Finch's comment.
