I don't think this has any equivalent in UK or US law. It is based on the concept of a "reserve quota" of an inheritance for spouses and children. So if the deceased left too much in a will to others, then a spouse or child can apply to the courts for that portion to be reduced so that they receive their rightful "reserve quota". I have put a literal translation in inverted commas, but you could put the Italian and the a brief explanation in brackets or as footnote.
