COVID-19 English to French Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Solar project

Proposed translations (French)
3 des unités de production pour le réseau

Discussion

Tony M Dec 6, 2020:
@ Asker It means big solar power plants on a large enough scale for them to perform like a public power utility — i.e. be able to furnish lots of power to lots of consumers; as distinct from a smaller-scale plant supplying say one building, or a single village, etc.

Proposed translations

des unités de production pour le réseau

or literally:

dont la production est à une échelle suffisante pour les connecter au réseau

one way of saying it - if these plants are "utility-scale" - at such a scale that they can be part of "utilities" then they are big enough to supply the electrical grid.

that pretty big solar farm will be "off-grid" - only for internal use by Thames Water.

you could also try

"des unités de production à une échelle industrielle"

although to me that sounds like a throwback from the Industrial Revolution
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Yes, but that doesn't mean they ARE going to supply the grid; just that they are of such a scale that they COULD do so. That little word '-scale' in EN can't just be glossed over... / Indeed — but that amounts to over-interpretation.

true, but almost all that are of THAT size would be connected to the grid. OTOH to be "utilities" (=a service available to any paying customer) these plants must be connected to the grid, or "of a size such that they could be ..."
