Spanish term

contribuir a la autogestión

Spanish to English Other International Org/Dev/Coop Project objectives
Buenas tardes,

Tengo una duda con la siguiente expresión:

**Contribuir a la autogestión** de las estructuras comunitarias en función del bienestar de la niñez

My try:
**Help** community structures/groups **become self-sustainable** from a child well-being perspective

Por el contexto, estoy traduciendo "contribuir a la autogestión" como "Help SB/ST become self-sustainable", y aunque no es parte de mi consulta sigue una parte algo confusa "en funcion del..."

Pienso que en vez de "en función de" debería decir "considerando"

Discussion

David Hollywood Mar 12, 2021:
I think "well-being" ("wellbeing" if you like) is preferable to "welfare" due to the widespread negative connotations of "welfare" on both continents.
neilmac Mar 9, 2021:
@Muriel I was going to note in my original post that "welfare" may entail a negative connotation in the US, where there is widespread opposition to/suspicion of a welfare state. However, I don't perceive the same thing in the UK, or at least not as widely held.
Muriel Vasconcellos Mar 9, 2021:
Not quite synonymous While I agree that the two terms are used interchangeably when used with 'child', 'welfare' also has the connotation of 'being on the dole'.
David Hollywood Mar 9, 2021:
In the broadest sense, welfare refers to the wellbeing of individuals, families and the community. The terms welfare and wellbeing are often used interchangeably. Positive wellbeing is associated with being comfortable, happy or healthy (Oxford University Press 2019).
Barbara Cochran, MFA Mar 8, 2021:
Child Welfare Like neilmac says, that would be the most usual expression in this context.
neilmac Mar 8, 2021:
Wellbeing vs welfare? "Child welfare"" appears in online searches more frequently than "child well-being", and the hyphenated form of the latter appears almost 3 times more frequently than the un-hyphenated form. Apparently there's a difference...
Barbara Cochran, MFA Mar 7, 2021:
I think your idea is OK.

The words “welfare” and “wellbeing” have two very different meanings in economics.

The most familiar meaning to the general public in the United States is that Welfare refers to a collection of government programs such as food stamps and Medicare, usually intended to help the poor.

However, economists more often use the word “welfare” in a very different sense–as a synonym for wellbeing. Welfare or wellbeing refer to an overall condition emphasizing happiness and contentment, though also including one’s standard of living in financial or material ways.

Contribute to self determination

Could be an option:
"Contribute/Contributing to the self-determination of community structures for the welfare of children/child welfare/child well-being".

I'm posting on the basis that I think self-determination and self-management are roughly synonymous.

I perceive "welfare" as being the longer-established, standard term, whereas nowadays I associate "well-being" with post new-age faddy things like "mindfulness" or "hygge"...
Example sentence:
