With a slightly alternate translation of the whole text, I think "until the point of breaking or death" would also work nicely. As in: One case displays the miserable state of the bones, malformed, fractured, or riddled by arthritis — a reflection of the suffering endured by draught animals, yoked to a carriage, lashed with whips, until the point of breaking or death. |
