was lurking Explanation: An option. Lurk(verb) To be or remain hidden so as to wait in ambush for someone or something. "...that the royal guard was lurking on the hill..." -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day 5 hrs (2021-12-26 09:55:11 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Although Mario's suggestion "on the lookout" works nicely in the context, I usually think of "estar al acecho" as more akin to Adrian's proposal "lying in wait", sort of like a predator waiting to pounce on its prey.
