Spanish term or phrase: estaba al acecho
I would like to know the best translation of this phrase from Latin American Spanish into American English. Translator colleagues from Spain, feel free to send me your suggestions as well. This is a translation about the story of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves.

Is okay to translate it as" he was on the watch...??

Here is the full paragraph for your review:

Allí Alí Babá le contó lo que había sucedido, y el hermano, aunque ya era rico, no podía perder la oportunidad de aumentar su fortuna, así que partió en su calesa a la montaña que Alí Babá le había indicado, sin saber, que la guardia real estaba al acecho en esa colina, pues les faltaba un ladrón aún por arrestar y esperaban que saliese de la cueva para capturarlo””””””
Sin detenerse un instante, Semes se colocó frente a la cueva y dijo las palabras que Alí Babá ........

was lurking

Explanation:
An option.
Lurk(verb)
To be or remain hidden so as to wait in ambush for someone or something.

"...that the royal guard was lurking on the hill..."

Although Mario's suggestion "on the lookout" works nicely in the context, I usually think of "estar al acecho" as more akin to Adrian's proposal "lying in wait", sort of like a predator waiting to pounce on its prey.
There are several ways to spin this dreidel.

Example sentence(s):
  • The next day, a security guard was lurking in the shade...
  • ...beheaded, eaten or torn limb from limb by whatever unknown guard was lurking out there...

he was spying

Explanation:
Another installment:
'A guard or police officer was watching and waiting on the hill since one of the thieves was missing and could be inside the cave. Meanwhile, AliBaba's brother, though already rich, couldn't resist the opportunity to retrieve more treasure as he made his way up the hill in his own mobile transport.'

(ES: 'La policía o la guardía esperaba, vigilando, porque faltaba uno de los ladrones que podía estar dentro de la cueva. Mientras tanto, el hermano de AliBaba, aunque yo se había puesto rico, no podía resistirse a la oportunidad de rescatar más tesoro cuando se puso en el camino hasta la colina en su propio transporte móvil.')
