Dans les deux cas, on parlerait d'un médecin traitant ou titulaire en français, ce qui correspond par ailleurs à la description que fait Peter du "bagvagt" danois. Attention de confondre traduction et localisation.

What is in US an "attending physician" would be in UK a "consultant", just to add some confusion.

À mon humble avis, la traduction la plus générique de cette appellation (à la différence de l'appellation spécifique qu'on ne trouverait qu'en France) me semble "médecin traitant" ou "médecin titulaire" : c'est le médecin responsable du patient; il se distingue des résidents et des internes qui sont généralement sous sa responsabilité.

you are in fact translating from Danish, not from English.

Why not simply ask in the Danish to French language pair? What's to be gained by translating twice / in two steps?

Also, how sure are you that "attending physician" is the right translation for "bagvagt"? As far as I can see it's not quite the same - an MD (of whatever rank) would have the role of "attending physician" in relation to a specific patient, while the definition given for "bagvagt" sounds more like a job title / a rank in hierarchy (possibly a "registrar", just a guess).
