The rain is intense. Such heavy rain is a semi-desert speciality. Once again the volume of water is too great for the downpipes that lead from our roof-terraces into our rainwater storage tanks. So when it siles down, water backs up on those terraces and inevitably finds any weakness, hence damp patches on the ceiling. I wrote that word, siles, then the computer’s brain underlined it. It’s a word I distinctly remember from my Lincolnshire childhood, so although I normally ignore red underlining, I checked, and Chambers English Dictionary has this: ‘sile, seil. (dial.) – v.i. to rain heavily’, and suggests a Scandinavian origin. Is it too fanciful to imagine that, having grown up on the Lincolnshire coast, having had classmates with Scandinavian and Baltic names like Eskesen (Danish) and Riekstins (Latvian), this is why this dialect word enriched, back in the 1960s, my tentatively growing grasp on our endlessly rich language?
