I understand the whole principle but not what the "portés" bit means.

bills sold for discount
Bill Discounting is a short-term finance for traders wherein they can sell unpaid invoices, due on a future date, to financial institutions in lieu of a commission. The Bank purchases the bill (Promissory Note) before its due date and credits the bill’s value after a discount charge to the customer’s account.

: wrong explanation: in actual fact what is "sold" is not the invoice (that would be "affacturage") but the financial instrument (="l'effet") given by the buyer as payment (THAT is what's happening in this ST: "escompte")

OK, Conor (one 'N') - I initially thought you meant bills 'getting' discounted - which isn't a bad idea and possibly within acceptably creative parameters for those of us who have, for law degree or notarial purposes, studied negotiable instruments and bills exchange as part of a UK commercial / business law syllabus...

'Do they actually DO anything useful with all this information? INSEE? I'm interested.' I have no inside info., except that they are on the tax-deductible 'engagements' side of the balance sheet. If there is a scam / arnaque, it's going to be more devious than that, such as repeat credit-card debits of the tax bill. I can't expand on-list.....

Example sentence:
Discount of bill of exchange is a short-term financing granted by the Bank. The Bank purchases the bill of exchange before its payment term at a price less the amount of discount interest.
IATE: effet porté à l'escompte bills discounted
Note from asker:
Thanks Adrian. I often use IATE but the deadline is gettiing tight on this one. |

I didn't mean anything, I'm just trying to figure out what the French taxman/Mr Bercy is trying to say. Do they actually DO anything useful with all this information? INSEE? I'm interested. |

Thanks, Steve. I'd almost forgotten about this answer that seemed to be a bog-standard accounting entry.

Thanks! I don't know if I can call it factoring though, strictly speaking. Problem solved though. |
