Spanish to English translations [PRO] Tech/Engineering - General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters / Means of transportation (CHILE)
Spanish term or phrase:taxi colectivo (Chile)
Hola, colegas.
Saludos, mew
I sincerely appreciate your contributions. In a previous post I said I was fine with Phil's suggestion, but I was wrong and I apologise because I meant Neilmac's --that's the literal "collective taxi" which is what I used and my client appreciated it. --He said the translation was for Canada and, although he did not know whether or not the concept is known in that country, he agreed that the term was perfectly understandable with my brief explanation at the bottom of the page.
Saludos afectuosos para todos. Me dio mucho gusto interactuar con ustedes después de tanto tiempo. Abrazos especiales para Jennifer y Jane! :))
"well-evidenced by your own inability to opt firmly in favour of any one of the various terms" Hello? Where do you see "inability"? I mentioned "long-winded" vs "succinct" and already voted for ONE (succinct) answer thus making my position absolutely clear. And I used to live in Montreal so familiar with the term "taxibus". https://www.stm.info/en/info/networks/bus/local (I also lived in the UK at various stages for that matter)
What makes this "Pro" is well-evidenced by your own inability to opt firmly in favour of any one of the various terms mentioned in your last comment. It's not (only) about "knowing what it (taxi colectivo) is" - it's also about finding a translation that will make sense to Asker's target readership.
What exactly makes this "Pro"? Nothing difficult about the Spanish at all? We all know what it means, and just a bit of research tells us what it is: a shared taxi on a fixed route. So "taxibus" has both elements included. I never heard of a "route taxi". Maybe a "fixed-route shared taxi" but that's rather long winded compared to the succinct "taxibus".
It may not be important that 'route taxis' as such don't really exist in the UK. A functional translation should suffice. And I agree, María Eugenia: How anyone could categorize this as non-PRO is beyond me.
Nowadays companies like Uber tend to provide this kind of service, although without the fixed routes described. The last time I was back, recently, getting a taxi was difficult. Apparently many drivers are giving up due to current regulatory hassles and fuel price rises, etc.
Tiene un recorrido fijo. En la República Dominicana, le dicen 'carro público' que, en realidad, son privados. In Jamaica, where they're also common, they're called route taxis.
I think my client may need this translation for Canada. I am contacting him but he is hard to reach. I guess I'll use the first answer I get here and he will have to do with that! Phil's sounds good to me :)
A car that carries people for money is a taxi. If it carries passengers who are strangers to each other, it's a shared taxi. I also found Uber X Share described as a taxi colectivo. And you could translate it as "rideshare". The asker wants the answer in British English, not the equivalent in Britain.

As an expatriate Brit living in Chile, I can assure you that there is no equivalent in the UK.
