English term or phrase: compensated U.S. workforce
As “The Sharing Economy” notes, as late as the turn of the 20th century, almost half of the compensated U.S. workforce was self-employed. It was only with the rise of large corporations that the paradigm shifted.

disagree  Tony M: But in FR, 'salarié' would specifically imply employed people, and here we are also including self-employed people who are "getting paid for their work" We make a specific distinction between 'salarié' and 'indépendant'.
