agree  Tony M: Though not necessarily an error of word order: we may think of it as a vault consisting of crossed Gothic ribs. Sounds like US punctuation: I'd have put 'cross Gothic-ribbed vault'

-> Thanks. But the syntax and punctuation are confusing, which is probably why the asker has posted the question.

agree  Yvonne Gallagher: As said above, not necessarily wrong word order

neutral  Christopher Crockett: Sorry Phil, but in 50+ years as a medieval art hysterian, i have to say that i've never --ever-- seen the term "cross ribbed" used. Just saying "rib vault" is enough at least for those fimailiar with the "Gothic" style.

disagree  Tony M: What your reference is about is something quite different... in effect, the intersection of two vaults; this is about the fact that the vault is made of Gothic (= pointed) arches that criss-cross.

disagree  Yvonne Gallagher: No, it doesn't mean this

This is the simplest, most basic image of a cross-ribbed vault — not how it is quite different from a crossed vault.

agree  Daryo: The rest of the ceiling might look as a crossed vault (not always) but the key point is in the ribs.
